According to Pema Chödrön, each person’s physical life is like a mandala – a vast circle. We stand in the centre of our own circle, and everything we see, hear, experience and think forms the mandala of our life.
Mandala, known as a sacred circle, starts with a focal point – the centre. It has been compared to the core of the universe, the start to anything and everything that exists. This can be as diverse as the start of a newborn child’s life or the beginning of any novel experience. The centre from which everything develops and connects to - also acts as a catalyst to reach the ultimate goals of life.
The journey of creating a mandala is known to hold more significance than the final product. We never know what it would look like after every layer that is added, just like the journey of life that a person undertakes without knowing the uncertainties and its outcome on the way to the final destination.
With ambitious attempts to attain the ultimate goal along with the inevitable uncertainties, we become ever-evolving, constantly expanding our horizons, like a mandala design.
The mystic patterns in a mandala are boundless, depicting the infinite opportunities and breaks in life. We go through the twists and turns, the crests and troughs, the joys and sorrows as a whole, making our soul more resilient than ever at each step.
Experiencing these patterns act as a source of our survival, promotes our growth and encourages us to continue striving for more in life.
When we finally reach our destination i.e the outermost circle of the mandala, we have successfully created something significant, expressive and meaningful. It depicts the state of being complete, termed as wholeness. Thus, the process of creating a mandala is the same as a life exploring one’s true identity by connecting to the surroundings and creating oneness.
