"Main apni favorite hun" (My favorite person is myself), said Geet, and she no longer remained favorite of only herself.
20 something Geet is on her journey back to Bhatinda, during which she meets Aditya. A snobbish, self-contained, stubborn, pensive industrialist who's recently been dumped and is ready to kill himself. Geet, a jolly chatterbox, happy go lucky of a soul, meanwhile is in "love" with Anshuman. In the course of the twisted journey from Mumbai to Bhatinda, Aditya and Geet become very good friends and Aditya falls for her. After 9 months, he gets to know Anshuman abandoned Geet and sets off to set things right between them. Anshuman comes back wanting to get back together with Geet, but she realizes it's Aditya she's meant to be with.
The plot of the movie is pretty basic, but the story, screenplay, and direction by Imtiaz Ali, the acting by Kareena Kapoor Khan and Shahid Kapoor, and music by Pritam, Sandesh Shandilya and Sanjay Chowdhary is what makes the film an exceptional one in the genre of romance and drama. This extravagant of a movie was written by Imtiaz Ali in two and a half days, the final dialogues of which he penned down whilst being trapped in a resort in Manali due to snowfall. Can you believe that? I took more time to write my Graduation's final fieldwork report. The movie went through a series of hurdles like the low budget, less time due to Kareena and Shahid's upcoming projects, weather conditions, and crucially the break-up of the lead roles in real life during the shooting period which could've resulted in calling off the project entirely. But like true professionals, they both didn't let any difficulty in their personal lives reflect in their on-screen characters and chemistry, and that's nothing but commendable. The crew got through every other struggle and ‘Jab We Met' was a thing!
The success of ‘Jab We Met' is rooted in its relatability and that's because the character build-up of both Geet and Aditya was given substantial time and effort. The story wasn't just a love story, it was the story of Geet's growth as a person, Aditya's revelation of his true identity, the narrative of how love can be painful but the right kind will always show you the light in darkest of tunnels. Every minute into the storyline, you learn something new about the character that adds to your perception of them and enriches your experience more and more. The unpredictability of Geet's behavior further elevates our interest and Aditya, despite his "angry young man" persona, steals our hearts.
Geet coaches us to live in the moment, "Carpe Diem" if you will. She actively makes efforts to sparkle some joy in Aditya's life and in ours too. Her motto of not regretting not doing what she wanted to, is to live by and her smile to die for. She makes us want to be more like her, and if you're anything like me, you probably exited the theatre thinking "Imtiaz definitely spied on me for inspiration." ( Just waiting for my Aditya now :p) On the other hand, Aditya makes you feel calm, and whenever something goes wrong, we already are looking forward to him taking control of the situation. His personality mirrors credibility and soothes us to the core.
If you were shipping Geet and Aditya from the starting, by the end you know for a fact they belong together. Right from missing the second train and having to stay in a Hotel, from Geet leaving home and Aditya taking her back to face her family after all, him getting off on an unknown platform and being followed by Geet, or Aditya losing faith in life and basically being given a second life by her, their lives attain balance when they are together.
‘Jab We Met' will forever and ever be one of the greatest relatable love stories put forth in one of the most remarkable styles.
