Dirty Dancing is undoubtedly one of the most tastefully designed mild sensual romance that keeps you on your toes with its drama ingredients and you don't realize when you started wishing for the two lovebirds to get together already. Written by Eleanor Bergstein and directed by Emile Ardolino, the movie has its own charm and is fascinating in its own way.
Jennifer Grey as "Baby", keeps you engrossed with the growth of her character. Baby goes on a family vacation to her family resort. She's shown to be a shy, modest, timid of a girl generally overshadowed by her sister. But she shares a special bond with her father and it shows in the conversations that take place throughout. Partying, being a center of attraction, being a part of the large group doesn't attract her. She doesn't get swayed like regular teenagers, so when she finds herself walking to the dance halls every night, it's like she's found a different paradise on earth, just for herself. The instructor of the dancing classes is Johnny Castle played by Patrick Swayze. This handsome, well-built, and gorgeous of a man swooping every woman off her feet. He seems to be enjoying all the attention but he's mellow and devoid of love inside.
He starts teaching Baby to dance, who's very basic with her dancing skills yet. Incidentally, Johnny has a big dance event coming up and his dancing partner has a medical emergency so Baby offers to help. Johnny has just a week to teach all of it to Baby, which obviously means they spend day and night together practicing. They fall for each other over time and confess it to each other. Both of them have to face the taunts and humiliation from people around and Baby is even asked to cut all ties with Johnny, but Baby for the first time stands up for herself and her love. She questions her Father if he really wants her to be happy or just live a life up to his and society's expectations. Their love reigns and they reign our hearts.
The movie is an example showing that you don't have to spend a fortune to make a great film. There is some sort of absolute magic in this movie. Although Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey absolutely hated each other throughout the making of this film(What?!!), they possess beautiful chemistry on the set. This is one of the original "feel good" dance films, which spawned dozens of remakes. But none of them come at par to its magnificence, not even its sequel "The Dirty Dancing 2". Dirty Dancing has a nostalgic, relaxed, summery mood, realistic characters, a relatable direct message tied with implausible music and dancing, and one of the best dance sequences in cinema.
It was the pinnacle of the 80's films and each time you watch it; it only gets better.
